【Crossing the River with a Reed】
【Production】 Cao Shaojie
【Size】 Height 46 cm
During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the Indian Bodhidharma came to China to spread Buddhism. Emperor Wu of Liang heard of his name and welcomed him to Jinling, but their ideas were not in line, so Bodhidharma quietly went north. Passing by the Beijiang River, there was no tool to cross the river, so he placed a bunch of reeds on the river surface, stepped on it and crossed it, and went to the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, the northern mountain, to face the wall for nine years. Later, he was honored as the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism. Therefore, China's Zen Buddhism is also called the Bodhidharma Sect, and Bodhidharma is honored as the "first generation of ancestor in the East". The thoughts of Bodhidharma have had a great influence on Chinese culture.
【Meaning】 This work was carefully designed by the sculptor, combining the characteristics of purple sand, using two-color clay materials to perfectly combine, with both form and spirit, and delicate workmanship. The clothes that rise in the wind are exaggerated and textured, and they are chic and elegant, vividly depicting Bodhidharma's fearless, courageous, and determined spirit in the face of the waves of the river. When we have a goal and direction in our hearts, we must stick to our inner desires. Even if life is like a journey in the opposite direction, even if we use a reed as a boat, we must bravely set sail and ride the wind and waves.
